Concert this Sunday coming.........

Concert by the Whitchurch Ensemble
Sunday 19th August, 3pm, St Candida and Holy Cross, Whitchurch Canonicorum
£10 (under-18s free), to include tea and cakes
In aid of the organ fund

Steven Mingay (clarinet), Paul Colman (viola), James Olsen (‘cello), Nicholas Brown (piano)

The Whitchurch Ensemble are all experienced performers and teachers of their instruments. Steven, Paul and James come from the Bournemouth area, but rehearsals take place in Whitchurch, using Nick’s rather nice Bosendorfer piano. Given the repertoire available, it is essentially two trios: clarinet and piano with either viola or ‘cello.

The programme includes two trios: Mozart’s delightful “Kegelstatt” trio (with viola), reputedly written while engaged in playing skittles and Beethoven’s Trio in B flat, Op.11 (with ‘cello), which has all the wit and brilliance that one expects from him. There is also Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro Op.70, contrasting the composer’s lyrical and exuberant syles, and then Four Pieces (for the trio with viola) by Max Bruch (he of the violin concerto in G minor). These are truly wonderful pieces with plenty of romantic passion and display, warm melodies and some moments of sheer magic.
